She Moved to an Island and Felt Completely Alone
After her daughter was born in California, Amanda Aude and her husband didn’t have many friends or family around. “As a new mom, it was very isolating for me,” she said.
That feeling, the specific loneliness of new parenthood in a place where nobody knows your name yet, is something thousands of Kitsap County families have experienced and almost nobody talks about directly. Amanda talked about it, and then she decided to do something about it.
When she and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island two years later, she made a promise to herself: she was going to make an effort to find her village.
The first step was Tots on the Trail, a toddler hiking group for parents and their children to connect outdoors, which Amanda started and has led every Tuesday morning on the island. The second step was bigger. Opening a play cafe had been a long-time dream of hers, and earlier this year she was one of 24 entrepreneurs in Kitsap County accepted into the 2025 Matchstick Lab Micro Business Accelerator program. It gave her the confidence she needed to push through and pursue her dream.
Bainbridge Play Cafe opened on Tormey Lane in April 2026. The village Amanda promised herself she would find, she built it instead.
What Bainbridge Play Cafe Actually Is
Bainbridge Play Cafe is a Scandinavian-inspired family space offering a coffee shop, a play space designed for kids aged 6 and under, and a full community programming calendar, all under one roof.
The concept is deliberately dual-purpose. The coffee shop operates independently from the play area, meaning parents can come in for a proper espresso and a pastry even if they do not have children with them. The cafe features experienced baristas and high-end equipment, alongside healthy food options, grab-and-go lunch items, and snacks for both parents and little ones.
The play space runs on a session model: $12 for one hour of play, or $20 for two hours, with a maximum of 10 children per session for kids aged 6 and under. Monthly memberships are available but not required. The intentionally small session size keeps the space from feeling chaotic, a deliberate design choice that reflects the Scandinavian concept of hygge (hoo-guh), the Danish idea of cozy contentment that shapes the entire atmosphere of the cafe.

The cafe holds walk-ins, reservations, and monthly memberships, and the programming calendar goes well beyond coffee and play. Throughout the year, Bainbridge Play Cafe hosts classes for children, groups for new parents, Tots on the Trail community walks, birthday parties, and events designed to bring kids and parents together in meaningful ways.
Adam, Amanda’s husband and a self-described cycling and coffee enthusiast, plans to host morning meetup groups specifically for dads. Their daughter Lily, four years old and described on the cafe’s own website as a “worm-loving girlie who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty,” serves as the business’s unofficial quality control officer and most honest reviewer.
The underlying belief behind all of it is simple and stated plainly on the cafe’s website: “We truly believe raising kids takes a village, and we’re so excited to create ours right here on Bainbridge Island.”
